In the first half of the year, I went to the cinema to watch a domestic animated film called "Deep Sea". However, while browsing the internet, I also came across several movies that were mentioned more frequently, such as "Exploration Department of the Universe", "The Disappeared Her", "Thirty Thousand Miles of Chang'an", and "The Gods". Many of them were titles I only heard about in July.
Looking back at the first half of the year, most of the movies I had been anticipating were foreign films, such as "Journey of the Bell Sprout", "Fast and Furious", "Guardians of the Galaxy 3", "Mission: Impossible 7", and Nolan's "Oppenheimer".
Do I dislike watching domestic films? I don't think I do, but I dislike the domestic films in recent years. In the past few years, there have only been two domestic films that have stayed in my mind, which are "Dying to Survive" and "Ash Is Purest White". Even after ten years, these two films still hold great significance for me. The portrayal of ordinary people in these films is so close to real life and unforgettable.
We clearly have plenty of social materials that can be adapted into films, but it seems that no one is willing to try. The director of "Deep Sea" said that he was telling the story of a person with depression. It was only after I saw the director's comment online that I remembered there was a scene in the movie that hinted at the female lead having a tendency towards depression. However, in terms of the plot of the movie, I don't think it is outstanding. During the viewing process, I was confused about what theme it was trying to convey. For a work that attempts to convey care for people with depression, "Deep Sea" performs average. Perhaps it's because I have been expecting more realistic films from the domestic film industry, but I have yet to see such works, and I feel a sense of disappointment. Is "Thirty Thousand Miles of Chang'an" good? Maybe it is, but what about the prosperous era of the Tang Dynasty? It's not that I don't like watching films set in prosperous times, but such films often make it easy for people to automatically associate themselves with the upper class. If we were to look at the Tang Dynasty from a different perspective, witnessing the society through the growth of grassroots individuals, I think I would like that setting more.
Not only are there few films that satirize reality, but now there are also few good action films, comedies, horror films, and science fiction films in China. And I feel like there are fewer and fewer, especially comedies. It has been a long time since I saw a domestic comedy film that made me laugh. In recent years, it has become difficult to find humor in domestic films. Sometimes, when I come across clips of previous Chinese comedy films on Bilibili, I can't help but click on them because I miss those works and I hope for better ones to come out. There is also another aspect that bothers me: China likes to repeatedly "torture" certain IPs, such as the Monkey King theme, the Gods theme, and certain war themes. The Monkey King can be said to be one of the most popular IPs in China, with countless movies about him, but most of them are bad films. In recent years, the Gods theme has also become popular, from "Birth of the Demon Child" to "Yang Jian" and now "Jiang Ziya". I don't even know who they plan to make a movie about next. I have discussed this topic with friends before, saying that "remakes can be tiresome, but it's not wrong. As long as they are done well, people will still watch them. Everyone is actually quite tolerant. What is most disappointing is the existence of well-known IPs that no one can make a good film out of. It is extremely disappointing, and gradually, everyone becomes tired of them and avoids them." That's probably what I wanted to say.
Personally, I believe that movies are a form of artistic expression and a channel for the release of public emotions. I once saw someone jokingly say that when facing their respective social problems, South Korea exposes various social injustices and darkness, Japan directly opens up a parallel world, and China chooses peace and prosperity.

I hope that one day I can see these themes on the big screen, gaining more attention and contemplation from the audience. But I also hope that society can become better, so that such "materials" will no longer appear frequently.
